Indian merchants and bankers were involved intimately in the export trade- they procured the woven clothes and transported them to ports; they financed the production; the merchants linked the port towns to inland regions. They were the financiers for running the production of materials and the transportation of goods. They also paid the advances to the weavers, procured the raw woven clothes from the weaver villages in India, and shifted their interests to the export towns. So the export merchants, in a way, linked the regional areas to the export towns. And in the port towns, the big shippers and export merchants had hired brokers who negotiated the prices of the goods with the supply merchants operating in the inland regions with the weavers.
