A patient is given an injection containing a radio isotope Tc99. This isotope has half life of 6 hours. Find the time after which the activity of Tc inside body of patient reduces to half.

We can consider two simultaneous processes happening together. One is excretion of technetium from body and second is radioactive decay.

Half life through first process is t1=24 hrs

Half life  through second process is t2= 6 hrs

So, average half life for simultaneous processes can be written as,

1T12=1t1+1t2

T1/2=t1t2t1+t2=4.8h

Now, activity is given by,

A=A02-tT12

A02=A02-tT12

2-1=2-tT12

t=T12=4.8 hr
