These natural caves were chosen by hunter-gatherers because they provided shelter from rain, heat, and wind. Hunter-gatherers were people who lived in the subcontinent as early as two million years ago. Their name is derived from how they obtained their food. They hunted wild animals, caught fish and birds, and collected fruits, roots, nuts, seeds, leaves, stalks, and eggs. The walls of many of the caves where these early people lived are painted. Madhya Pradesh and southern Uttar Pradesh have some of the best examples.
