Liberalism represented individual freedom and fairness for all people under the law for the new middle classes. It meant that middle-class liberals desired the end of the monarchy and favoured the establishment of a republic where people had the right to express themselves. Political Liberalism also emphasises the right of the people to have a say in who leads their country. In terms of politics, it emphasised the idea of consent-based government. Liberalism promoted market freedom and the elimination of government limitations on the flow of capital and goods.
