In Paramoecium, a single-celled protozoan, the movement of food through the cytopharynx (also known as the gullet or oral groove) is facilitated by cilia.

Paramoecium is covered in numerous tiny hair-like structures called cilia. These cilia beat rhythmically in a coordinated manner, creating currents of water around the organism. When Paramoecium feeds, it sweeps food particles (such as bacteria, algae, and other small organisms) along with water into its cytopharynx using the cilia.

Once the food particles are inside the cytopharynx, they are enclosed in a food vacuole, which is a membrane-bound sac. The food vacuole then fuses with lysosomes (organelles containing digestive enzymes) to digest the ingested food. After digestion, the nutrients are absorbed by the Paramoecium for its nutrition.
