The upper course is the source or origin of the river, which is narrow. In the middle course, the volume of water increases due to the tributaries joining the mainstream and forming meanders or curves. The rivers form oxbow lakes in the lower course due to the mainstream cut into a separate water body. Deltas are formed in this region by the sedimentary deposition of rivers. During their long course, the rivers erode the land and carry the sediments with them, turning them into fertile fine-grained soil and depositing them near the drainage to form deltas. The Ganga-Brahmaputra delta and the Krishna-Godavari delta are examples.
