Located alongside National Highway 44, the Salem Steel Plant is a stainless steel producing unit of SAIL (Steel Authority of India). The surrounding areas have an abundance of iron ore and lime. The steel plant in Tamil Nadu started production in 1982. A major producer of high-quality stainless steel, the Salem plant had the added advantage of nearby ports. The cheap power availability and the vast market favour the plant. The low phosphorus and sulphur content in iron ore makes it suitable for the production of high-grade, exportable iron and steel.
