The first-ever iron and steel plant in India, the Tata Iron and Steel Company Limited (TISCO) in Jamshedpur, was established in 1912. Located on the banks of rivers Subarnarekha and Kharkai, the plant had a prominent role in manufacturing pieces of war equipment for the First World War. The iron ore and coal deposits in Jharkhand and Kolkata, the water from the Subarnarekha and Kharkai rivers, and the nearby port of Kolkata facilitated the development of the plant. The Jamshedpur plant has a role in making the city the first planned industrial city in India. The city is referred to as Tatanagar after the TISCO plant.
