Chennai port is marked in the political map of India
The second-largest container port in India is the Chennai port. It is one of the oldest ports and the largest one in the Bay of Bengal. The Madras port was inaugurated in 1881 though maritime trade began around 1639. These came to be known as the Chennai port after Madras was renamed Chennai in 1996. The port has a strategic location for import and export to South India and is known as the Gateway of South India. The port provides connectivity to around 50 ports in different parts of the world, ranking the 86th largest container port.
