Active immunity is not very quick and takes time to develop. The primary response to a pathogen is slow as the body needs time to produce antibodies and memory cells. However, once the immune system has been activated, the secondary response is strong and provides long-lasting protection.
(1) When a host is exposed to an antigen (living or dead), antibodies are produced in response. This type of immunity is called active immunity.
(2) When ready-made antibodies are directly given to a person, it is called passive immunity. This type of immunity provides immediate protection but is short-lived. It does not provide immunological memory.
(4) Foetus receives some antibodies from the mother, which is an example of passive immunity. This is because the foetus receives antibodies from another immunized organism (mother) rather than through the production of antibodies by its own immune system.
