Ideology of the BJP is Hindutva.
The Indian National Congress' secular policies and practices were sharply criticised by the BJP, which promoted the Hindutva ("Hindu-ness") ideology that attempted to define Indian culture in terms of Hindu values (Congress Party). The BJP started to see electoral success in 1989 when it tapped into anti-Muslim sentiment by advocating for the construction of a Hindu temple in a section of Ayodhya that Hindus revere but was at the time home to the Babri Masjid (Mosque of Bâr). The BJP had significantly expanded its political popularity by 1991 when it won 117 seats in the Lok Sabha (the lower house of the Indian parliament) and took control of four states.
