If a + b = − 5 and ab = 6, then what is the value of a³ − b³, where a > b? 

Given: a + b = −5,  ab = 6

⇒ a − b = $\sqrt[ ]{{\left(a+b\right)}^2-4ab}$ 

⇒ a − b =$\sqrt[ ]{{\left(-5\right)}^2-4\times 6}$ 

⇒ a − b = $\sqrt[ ]{25-24}$ 

⇒ a − b = ±1 

It is given that a > b. 

∴ a − b > 0 

Therefore, a − b = 1 

Now, (a − b)³ = a³ − b³ − 3ab(a − b) 

∴ a³ − b³ = (a − b)³ + 3ab(a − b) 

= 1³ + 3×6×1

= 19
