Let a2+b2=x

12ab=(a+b)22ab=a2+b2=x

 ab=1x2

and a3+b3=(a+b)a2+b2ab

a3+b3=xab                …… (1)

but ab=1x2

Hence a3+b3=x1x2=3x12

Hence the equation

(12ab)a3+b3=12, becomes

x3x12=12

     3x2x24=0     (x3)(3x+8)=0

 x=3 or x=83 (not possible) as x=a2+b2<0

 x=3  a2+b2=3
