If the tunnel is horizontal, the mass "m" stays in place because there is no gravitational effect due to gravity (g) in a horizontal motion. If the tunnel is vertical, the mass "m" exhibits oscillatory motion. It moves up and down between the poles and the equator because the gravitational pull (g) is different at the poles and the equator. The value of gravity (g) is smaller at the equator than at the poles due to the centrifugal force caused by the rotation of the planet.
