From the figure, area of square ABCD

=Side   2

=42

=16 cm2

The radius(r1) for the circle at the centre is 22=1 cm  

Therefore, the area of the circle at the centre is:

=πr2=π×12= π cm2

The radius for the four quadrants r= 1 cm

And therefore, the area of the four quadrants is:

=4×14×π×r2=π×12=π cm2   

Now,  the area of the shaded portion 

= Area of the square - (Area of the circle at the centre + Area of the 4 quadrants) 

=16-(3.14+3.14)=16-6.28=9.72 cm2
