Detailed Solution

Given quadratic equation is x2-λx+8=0 and the difference of roots is 2.

We have to find the value of λ.

Let the roots of the above quadratic equation be α and β. Then,

Sum of roots =-ba=--λ1=λ           b=-λa=1

 α+β=λ       1

and, product of roots =ca=81=8           c=8     a=1

 λβ=8       2

and α-β=2  (given the difference of roots)

Now, using the fact that  α+β2=α-β2+4αβ, we get

 λ2=22+4×8              Using equation 1, 2, 3    λ2=4+32=36     λ=±36=±6

So, λ=±6

Hence option 3 is correct.
