Question Image

Let AB and CD be two trees such that AB = 20 m, CD = 28 cm and BD = 17 cm.

Draw BE parallel to CD.

Then,

ED = CD − CE

⇒ ED = 28 − 20    [∵ AB = CE]

⇒ ED = 8 cm

In △BED, using Pythagoras Theorem,

BD2 = BE2 + ED2

⇒ (17)2 = BE2 + (8)2

⇒ BE2 = 289 − 64 = 225

⇒ BE = 15 m

Therefore, AC = BE = 15 cm

Hence, the horizontal distance between the trees is 15 m.
