Detailed Solution

Mitral valve is the left atrioventricular valve. The left atrium receives oxygenated blood from the lungs and this blood normally goes to the left ventricle which pumps the blood to various organs of the body. If the mitral valve fails to open, blood pressure would rise in the pulmonary veins and is ultimately transmitted back to the pulmonary capillaries and the pulmonary arteries.
