We have been given,

A (2, − 4)

is at the equal distance from

P (3, 8)

and Q(-10,y).

D = \sqrt{{(x_{2} - x_{1})}^{2} + {(y_{2} - y_{1})}^{2}}

Substituting

x_{2} = 2, x_{1} = 3, y_{2} = - 4, and y_{1} = 8

, in the formula,
Substituting the values,

PA = \sqrt{{(2 - 3)}^{2} + {(- 4 - 8)}^{2}}

PA = \sqrt{1 + 144}

PA = \sqrt{145}

And,
Substituting

x_{2} = 2, x_{1} = (- 10), y_{2} = - 4, and y_{1} = y

, in the formula,

QA = \sqrt{{(2 - (- 10))}^{2} + {(- 4 - y)}^{2}}

QA = \sqrt{144 + 16 + 8 y + y^{2}}

QA = \sqrt{y^{2} + 8 y + 160}

As we have been given A is at the equal distance from P and Q, therefore, PA=QA.
Thus, equating (1) and (2),

∴ \sqrt{y^{2} + 8 y + 160} = \sqrt{145}

\Rightarrow y^{2} + 8 y + 15 = 0

\Rightarrow y^{2} + 5 y + 3 y + 15 = 0

\Rightarrow y (y + 5) + 3 (y + 5) = 0

\Rightarrow (y + 3) (y + 5) = 0

∴ y = - 3, y = - 5

Applying the distance formula,
Substituting

x_{2} = (- 10), x_{1} = 3, y_{2} = - 3, and y_{1} = 8

, in the formula,

PQ = \sqrt{{(- 10 - 3)}^{2} + {(- 3 - 8)}^{2}}

PQ = \sqrt{169 + 121}

PQ = \sqrt{290}

Now, Substituting

x_{2} = (- 10), x_{1} = 3, y_{2} = - 5, and y_{1} = 8

, in the formula,

PQ = \sqrt{{(- 10 - 3)}^{2} + {(- 5 - 8)}^{2}}

PQ = \sqrt{169 + 169}

PQ = \sqrt{338}
