If the speed of a body is continuously decreasing, the body is said to be retarding.
As the speed of the body decreases, its velocity also decreases and the acceleration becomes negative or undergoes deceleration or retardation. Hence, when the speed of a body decreases, it is stated to be in deceleration. Also, it is known that the acceleration is defined as the rate of change of velocity. Since the final velocity is less than the initial velocity, the acceleration is negative and hence the body is said to be retarded.
