If two bodies of mass M1 and M2 are placed at a distance r apart they have a force of gravitation F between them. If both of the masses are reduced to half, then the force of gravitation would be F4.
According to the law of gravitation, the force of attraction between two bodies of masses M1 and M2 is directly proportional to the product of the masses.
F α M1 M2 …………………. (i)
F α 1r2   ………………… (ii)    [r= distance between two bodies]
On combining equations (i) and (ii) we get,
=M1 M2r2   ……………………. (iii)
If both the masses are reduced to half and distance remains same then new force (F'),
       F'αM12 × M22
F' =M12 × M22r2
F' =M1 M24 r2
F' =F4
