If we look at the figure for exports from India we see a steady decline. The decline in exports happened because of British policies. Imports were restricted by the British government to support newly established industries. India, an exporter of finished hand-woven textiles and muslin, had been forced by the Britishers to import the finished goods from factory production. These mass-produced items were cheaper than hand-woven goods. There was no trade competition left after the imposition of tariffs. This tariff imposition boosted the growth of the industries and emerged as a business power.
