If you touch the charged electroscope then the clips will collapse.
An instrument used to detect a charged body is called an electroscope. It is made up of a metal rod. Two leaves of aluminium foil are fixed at one end, and a metal disc at another end. The leaves of aluminium foil are placed in a conical flask, and the leaves are isolated from the air in the flask. When the metal disc comes in contact with any changed body, then aluminium foil leaves separate from each other. This is due to the transfer of charges to leaves through a metal rod. If the body is not charged, then the leaves will not separate from each other. In an electroscope, if the negatively charged object is brought near the metal clip, then the strips will diverge, and if the positively charged object is brought near the clip, then the strips will collapse. When we touch the metal clip with our hand, then the charge on the clips gets discharged, and the strips will come back to their original state.
