The given expression is  $p^2+6p-16$ . 

It can be factorised using the identity, ${\mathrm{x}}^2+(\mathrm{a}+\mathrm{b})\mathrm{x}+\mathrm{ab}$. 

Here, $\mathrm{a}+\mathrm{b}=6$ and $\mathrm{a}\times \mathrm{b}=-16$. 

Therefore, we can say that $\mathrm{a}=8$ and $\mathrm{b}=-2$.

So, $p^2+6p-16$ can be written as:

$p^2+6p-16=p^2+8p-2p-16$

                        $= p(p+8)-2(p+8)$          [by taking common terms]    

                           $=(p+8) (p-2)$

Now, on comparing we get, 

$(p+8) (p-2)=(p+x) (p-y)$

$\Rightarrow x=8$ and $y=2$

Hence, the respective values of $x$ and $y$ are $8,2$.
