Detailed Solution

For Lyman series, vL=Rc112-1n2

where n=2,3,4,.......

For the series limit of Lyman series, n=

    v1=Rc112-12=Rc                 .....(i)

For the first line of Lyman series, n=2

    v2=Rc112-122=34Rc                 .....(ii)

For Balmer series

    vB=Rc122-1n2

where n= 3,4,5,....

For the series limit of Balmer series, n=

    v3=Rc122-12=Rc 4                .....(iii)

From equations (i), (ii) and (iii), we get

v1=v2+v3     or,   v1-v2=v3
