Early Delhi sultans, especially the Iltutmish, preferred to appoint their particular slaves—known as bandagan in Persian—purchased for military service to serve as governors over aristocrats and landed chieftains. They were purposefully given some of the most important political posts in the kingdom. They entirely relied on their ruler, so the Sultan could trust and rely on them. As a result, Iltutmish chose the Bandagans over other aristocrats and chieftains to serve as the sultanate's administrators because he had more faith in them.
