Imperial Forest Research was set up in Dehradun.
The British were concerned that the indiscriminate tree-cutting by traders and locals might harm forests. Dietrich Brandis, a German specialist, was therefore invited for consultation and appointed India's first inspector general of forests. Brandis understood that the proper structure needed to be put in place to manage the woods and that people needed to be educated in the field of conservation.
This system would require legal authorisation. There needed to be guidelines for using forest resources.
To conserve the forest to produce lumber, it was necessary to prohibit tree-felling and gazing. Any person who chopped trees illegally had to face the consequences.
The Brandis established the Indian Forest Service in 1864 and assisted in developing the Indian Forest Act of 1865. Imperial Forest Research was set up in Dehradun in 1906.
