Detailed Solution

Giuseppe Mazzini, Count Cavour, Giuseppe Garibaldi took part in the Italian unification. Italy was politically divided into seven states for a very long time. While the Bourbon family governed in the south and the Pope dominated central Italy, Austria ruled over the north of the country. Only Sardinia and Piedmont were under the control of an Italian princely house. The three key individuals who contributed to the unification of Italy were:
  • Giuseppe Mazzini: He tried to unite Italy in the 1830s but was unsuccessful. In order to achieve his objectives, he founded the secret organisation, i.e. Young Italy, in 1831. He thought that humankind naturally existed in groups called nations.
  • Count Cavour: The Italian Chief Minister who brought the many regions of Italy together was named Count Cavour. He was neither democratic nor a revolutionary. He enlisted France's assistance in 1859 to repel Austrian forces.
  • Giuseppe Garibaldi: He gathered a sizable contingent of armed volunteers and enlisted with the regular forces. He successfully rallied the local people behind him and drove the Spanish out of Italy.
