Detailed Solution

In shifting cultivation, plots of forests are cut and burnt in rotation. During monsoon, seeds are sown in the ashes, that is used as fertilizer, and the crop is harvested between October and November. These plots are cultivated for a few years (until they lose fertility) and left fallow for 12 to 18 years to allow the forest to regenerate. These plots are planted with a variety of crops. It is also known as swidden agriculture. It is a long-standing agricultural practice in much of Asia, Africa, and South America.
