Giuseppe Garibaldi led a large group of armed volunteers who marched into South Italy and the Kingdom of Two Sicilies in 1860 instead of using regular military forces. After entering the area, he and his troops could win the support of the local peasants who wanted to expel the Spanish Rulers from Italy.
