In 1960, the bilingual state of Bombay was divided into separate states for Marathi and Gujarati speakers.
This is because many language groups pressed for the establishment of independent states following the creation of Andhra (the first state created on a linguistic basis). A States Reorganisation Commission was established, and its report was published in 1956. It formed compact provinces for speakers of Assamese, Bengali, Oriya, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, and Telugu. North India's significant Hindi-speaking region was divided into several states. Later, Bombay, a bilingual state, was also divided.
