The word Khokhar suggests Bloodthirsty, and its origin is in Persian. Khokhars are predominantly Muslims and follow Islam. However, under Baba Fariduddin Ganjshakar, Khokhars converted to Islam. Firishta, the Persian historian of the mediaeval period, has called the then Khokhar people a "barbaric race without religion and morality. Muhammad Ghori undertook many campaigns against the Khokhars in Punjab before he was killed in the village of Dhamiak, located in the Salt Range, in March 1206.
