In 1861, Victor Emmanuel II was proclaimed king of unified Italy.
Sardinia-Piedmont defeated the Austrian armies in 1859 due to a political alliance Cavour masterminded with France. A large faction of armed volunteers, led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, joined the fight in addition to the official army. Thus they marched into South Italy and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in 1860 and successfully rallied the local peasants to help them overthrow the Spanish authorities. Italian unification saw the coronation of Victor Emmanuel II as the king in 1861.
