In 1956 the official language law described as the Sinhala-only act was legislated in Srilanka by the Sinhala community. After freedom, the Sinhala residents were in the plurality and demonstrated against the government, due to which the Sinhala administration created Sinhala as the authorised language and ignored the Tamil language. It had accomplished protecting and promoting Buddhism.
