Detailed Solution

In 1829, sati was banned.
In Calcutta, Raja Rammohun Roy (1772–1833) established the Brahmo Sabha, which ultimately became the Brahmo Samaj. Rammohun Roy was especially struck by the difficulties widows had to deal with. He launched an offensive against the sati custom. Sanskrit, Persian, as well as several other Indian and European languages were among Rammohun Roy's strong points. Through his publications, he attempted to demonstrate that ancient literature did not support the practice of burning widows. Many British authorities had already started to criticise Indian traditions and customs by the first decade of the nineteenth century. Therefore, they were more than willing to pay attention to Rammohun, who was thought to be a smart person. Sati was outlawed in 1829.
