Both countries are predominantly Christian. In both countries, there is an internal division in the Christian community between Catholics and Protestants. However, in Northern Ireland, the economic differences cut across each other, whereas in Northern Ireland, the differences overlap. Hence, Catholics are generally poorer than Protestants in Northern Ireland. The social differences in Northern Ireland lead to deeper social divisions. This resulted in political conflicts between the two communities. While the Protestants wanted to remain with the UK, the Catholics wanted to be unified with the Republic of Ireland. This resulted in armed conflicts that saw a large number of deaths. Finally, a peace treaty was signed between the UK government and the protesting Catholics.
