In 1236, Sultan Iltutmish's daughter, Raziyya became sultan.Iltumish chose her daughter Raziyya as his successor. Because he did not find any of his sons capable of becoming the Sultan. She was the first and only Muslim ruler of Delhi. Raziyya became the sultan of Delhi in 1236. The Chronicler, Minhaj-I Siraj, quoted that she was more capable than her brothers, but the nobles were not happy about having a female ruler. Raziiyya did not follow the custom of wearing the veil in court and she rode elephants, attempted to rule independently, and went hunting. All these irritated the patriarchal society and Turkish nobles which resulted in a rebellion and at last she was defeated and killed.
