Martin Luther was a Christian reformer. In 1517, he published the 'Ninety-Five Theses', which criticised many Roman Catholic Church practices and ceremonies. A copy of the theses was put on the door of a church in Wittenberg. The Church was compelled to debate his ideas. Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses were quickly printed in large quantities and widely read. It caused a schism within the Church and marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. Martin Luther's translation of the New Testament sold 5,000 copies, and a second edition was published within three months. Several scholars believed that print created a new intellectual milieu and aided in disseminating new ideas that led to the Reformation.
