Detailed Solution

In 1600, around one-sixth cultivation of India’s landmass was under cultivation. This number has now increased to around 50%. Peasants expanded the borders of cultivation by thinning wood and claiming new territory as the need for food and population growth over the centuries. For many different causes, cultivation grew quickly throughout the colonial era. Commercial crops including jute, sugar, wheat, and cotton were actively promoted by the British. Since food grains were required to support the expanding urban population in nineteenth-century Europe, demand for these crops rose. Additionally, the colonial state believed that forests were useless during the beginning of the nineteenth century. They were regarded as wilderness that needed to be cultivated for the land to produce agricultural goods and generate revenues, increasing the state's income.
