In 1802, slavery was reintroduced by Napoleon Bonaparte.
After Napoleon Bonaparte wrested control from revolutionary France, he sought to rebuild the French Empire. In May 1802, he re-established slavery and the slave trade in France and its colonies, sparking a new wave of violence in the Caribbean. The law of 20 May 1802 had the express purpose of restoring slavery in Santo Domingo, Guadeloupe, and French Guiana, and was passed when Napoleon peacefully turned to the French colonies following the Treaty Amiens in 1802, and also restored Martinique. In France, There have been long-running debates about the advisory capacity of extending human rights to all of the French colonies. When the Convention decided to free all slaves in 1794, Napoleon reintroduced slavery ten years later. Much of the French economy was dependent on the slave trade and cities like Bordeaux and Nantes owed their position to the slave trade. Powerful businessmen got their hands on the slave trade, and the support and funding needed for Napoleon's wars as he saw Europe liberated. For products such as sugar, tobacco, coffee, and indigo, the slave trade was necessary.
