In 1848, a revolution led by the educated Middle-class was underway. The foundation of a nation-state based on parliamentary ideals, including a constitution, press freedom, and associational freedom, was advocated by men and women in the liberal middle class. In Frankfurt, many political organisations gathered to elect an all-German National Assembly. On May 18, 1848, the 831 chosen deputies marched to the Church of St. Paul in Frankfurt to assume their seats in the assembly. The monarchy that presided over Germany under the Constitution was subordinate to the Parliament. The majority of Parliament was made up of middle class members, and many women were active in the liberal movement.
