In 1856, Governor-General Lord Canning decided that Bahadur Shah Zafar would be the last Mughal king, and his descendants would be called princes. To ensure their dominance in the country, the East India Company began to target rulers and kings across India. They gradually grew in economic influence and earned a large amount of power.
