Detailed Solution

In 1856, Governor-General Lord Canning decided that Bahadur Shah Zafar would be the last Mughal king, and his descendants would be called princes. To ensure their dominance in the country, the East India Company began to target rulers and kings across India. They gradually grew in economic influence and earned a large amount of power. They could now impose wills upon the rulers and have a say in the administrative and revenue systems. They targeted the Mughals, who had been one of the most formidable dynasties in Indian history.
