In Calcutta, Madras and Bombay, universities were established in 1857. In 1854, the East India Company's Court of Directors in London delivered an educational Despatch to the Governor-General in India. Following the 1854 Despatch, the British enacted several measures. First, government education departments were established to exert control over all aspects of education. Efforts were made to develop a university education system. As a result of this dispatch, the British established universities in Calcutta, Madras and Bombay.
