Victor Emmanuel II of United Italy was crowned in 1861.
Giuseppe Mazzini sought to develop a methodical plan for the united Italian Republic in the 1830s. Sardinia-Piedmont was able to defeat the Austrian armies in 1859 owing to a political alliance Cavour planned and executed with France. A sizable group of armed volunteers, led by Giuseppe Garibaldi, joined the fight in addition to the official army. They marched into South Italy and the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies in 1860, and they were successful in rallying the local peasants to help them overthrow the Spanish authorities. Victor Emmanuel II was crowned king of a unified Italy in 1861. However, a sizable portion of the illiterate Italian population was blissfully ignorant of liberal nationalist philosophy.
