Detailed Solution

Victor Emmanuel II was crowned king of United Italy in 1861.
Giuseppe Mazzini attempted to put together a coherent program for the unitary Italian Republic in the 1830s. Due to the failure of revolutionary uprisings in both 1831 and 1848, the mantle of unifying the Italian states through war fell on Sardinia-Piedmont and its ruler King Victor Emmanuel II. Sardinia-Piedmont was instrumental in forging a deft diplomatic alliance with France, which led to the former defeating Austrian forces in 1859. Count Camillo de Cavour was a key figure in the Italian Unification. He did not identify as a radical or democrat. He intended to unite the disparate territories of the Italian peninsula into a constitutional union under the Sardinian monarchy. In 1861, Victor Emmanuel II was crowned as the monarch of United Italy.
