Detailed Solution

In 1878, the Arms Act was passed under which Indians were not allowed to possess arms. The Arms Act, passed by the British in 1878 CE, forbade Indians from owning any weapons. The British intended to prevent Indians from keeping rifles and pistols because they did not want another uprising like the one that occurred in 1857 CE. Nationalist figures like Surendranath Bannerjee criticised the Act as a sign of Indians' racial inferiority enforced by the racist British government. Lord Ripon was Lytton's viceroy successor (who presided over the country from 1880 to 1844) and withdrew the law in 1881.
