In 1910, chillies and arrows began circulating in the villages of Bastar. The people of Bastar were highly concerned when the colonial authorities sought to reserve two-thirds of the forest in 1905 and to halt shifting farming, hunting, and gathering of forest produce. People started congregating and talking about these topics in their village councils, bazaars, festivals, or gatherings of headmen and priests from other villages. Mango branches, a lump of soil, chillies, and arrows started travelling between villages in 1910. These were invitations for the peasants to revolt against the British. Each village contributed to the cost of the rebellion.
