In 1911, 67 per cent of the large-scale industries were located in Bengal and Bombay.
While the large-scale machine industries grew steadily after the First World War, they formed only a small part of the Indian economy. In the rest of the country, small-scale industries predominated. Only a small proportion of the total mechanical labour force worked in these large-scale industries. The rest worked in small factories and house units, often located in alleys and bylanes. In some cases, handicraft products expanded in the thirteenth century. By 1911, sixty-seven per cent of the large-scale industries were located in Bengal and Bombay since these two places accurately met the trade demands because of the harbours. Hence, most large-scale industries were situated in either Bengal or Bombay.
