Detailed Solution

In 1911, Ratnagiri  supplied more than half of the employees for the Bombay cotton factories. Factories required labourers, and their demand increased along with the growth of the factories. Indian manufacturers employed 584,000 people in 1901. Over 24,36,000 people had been recorded by 1946. Workers typically came from the nearby districts in industrial areas. In quest of employment, peasants and craftsmen who were unable to find it in the hamlet flocked to the industrial hubs. In 1911, the Ratnagiri district, which was next to Bombay, provided almost 50% of the labourers for that city's cotton industry.
