In 1917, Seth Hukumchand established the first Indian jute mill in Calcutta. He also established cotton mills and was active in social work. He financially supported the Hindi Sahitya Sammelan & was also a president of Madhya Bharat of Bharat Hindi Sahitya. Hukumchand belonged to a Jain family of Indore. He was a well-known personality in the Jain community. He established cotton mills called ‘Hukumchand Mills and Rajkumar Mill’ in Indore.
